Waupaca County ARES:
Post-Exam Next Steps
1. The FCC Fee & Payment Process
-
Check Your Email: Within 1 to 2 business days after passing, you will receive an official email from the FCC regarding your $35 application fee. (Be sure to check your spam/junk folder if you don't see it!)
-
The 10-Day Window: You have 10 calendar days from the date your file number is issued to pay the $35 fee directly to the FCC.
-
Payment Tip: Make your payment using a desktop or laptop computer, as mobile browsers can sometimes cause errors with the CORES payment portal.
-
Call Sign Issuance: Once paid (ideally before 5:00 PM EST), your official call sign is typically issued by the following morning.
2. Youth Licensing Grant Program
-
Reimbursement Available: If the candidate is 17 years old or younger, they qualify for the ARRL Youth Licensing Grant Program, which covers/reimburses the $35 FCC application fee.
3. Getting Started on the Air
-
Your Call Sign is Live: Once your call sign drops into the FCC database, you are officially licensed and ready to get on the air!
-
Take Your Time: There is no rush to buy expensive gear right away. Many operators start out with an affordable entry-level handheld transceiver (HT) to get their feet wet.
-
Recommended First Steps:
-
Create a QRZ Account: Set up your profile on QRZ.com to log contacts and look up other operators.
