Before Your Online Exam:

Candidate Instructions

1. Register for an FCC FRN

  • Before taking the exam, you need a Federal Registration Number (FRN) from the FCC.

  • You can register for free on the FCC CORES website. It takes only about 5 minutes.

2. Study Strategy & Practice Exams

  • Stay in Study Mode: Avoid taking practice exams right at the beginning. Learn the material first.

  • The Benchmark: We recommend seeing 90%–95% of the question pool in your practice software, with your last 4 practice exams scoring 85% or better. While the passing score is 74%, hitting this benchmark ensures high confidence and a near-certain pass.

3. Prepare Your Testing Environment & Equipment

  • Two Devices Required: You will need two devices with working cameras and microphones (any combination: PC and phone, tablet and phone, or two laptops).

  • Zoom: Download the latest version of Zoom on both devices.

  • Clear Your Space: Keep your desk clean and clutter-free. Cover any unused monitors or visible TVs with a sheet, towel, or large t-shirt.

  • No Headsets: Earbuds, headphones, and headsets are not allowed during the exam session. Audio must run through your computer/device speakers and microphone.

  • Close Background Apps: Close all messaging apps, games, and background programs (Discord, Steam, Teams, AI tools, etc.).

4. What to Have Ready on Exam Day

  • Photo ID: Have a valid government-issued photo ID ready (Driver's License or Passport). For minors, a school ID or birth certificate is acceptable. Minors 13 and under Must be accompanied by a gaurdian/parent also with a valid ID, and must stay with the minor until his/her test begins.

  • Calculators: You WON'T need a physical calculator; a digital one is built directly into the exam software.
